William Beebe (1877-1962) was an American naturalist, ornithologist, marine biologist, entomologist, and an explorer…a pioneer in the oceanic world. The Bathysphere was invented for his use. He was the curator of ornithology at the New York Zoological Gardens starting in 1899 and appointed the Director of the Department of Tropical Research at the New York Zoological Society in 1918. He was also one of the 20th century’s major advocates for conservation and the author of several books.
