Description: American Impressionist painter Soren Emil Carlsen (1853-1923) boldly signed this July 11, 1910 receipt for $500 from the Folsom Galleries, ostensibly for a painting or drawing that sold. The Bauer-Folsom Galleries of New York City held an exhibition of Carlsen’s paintings from March 5-11, 1910, about four months before the date of this receipt.
Carlsen’s paintings are in the collections of numerous museums, including: Metropolitan Museum of Art; Art Institute of Chicago; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; St. Louis Art Museum; and the Wadsworth Athenaeum, Hartford, Connecticut.
