Description

Description: In this January 2, 1895 typed letter signed Westinghouse states in part: “…I think we both went into the matter with the feeling that we could make some money out of the business, and in view of the great success of the steel casting business, we might have done quite well if we had had the capital to have gone on. However, these matters are past history. I enclose you herewith a check for $1,000., and I propose to send you a like sum each of the following quarters until I have sent you a total of $5,000. I desire particularly in sending this sum to you that the fact that I have done so shall be confidential and shall not be made a matter of comment in any way.”

Written on a 10″ x 8 1/2″ sheet of stationery imprinted: “Geo. Westinghouse, Jr. Pittsburgh, PA.” Item #A01771

George Westinghouse, Jr. (1846-1916), founder of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, found himself in direct competition with Thomas Edison. He promoted the use of alternating current, while Edison marketed direct current. Among his many inventions was the creation of the railway air brakes and a compressed air shock absorber for automobile suspensions.
