Description: James E. Murdoch signed his name in full below his birthdate “Born Jany. 25th, 1811” on a 2 ¾” x 4” card. He also dated it “March 14th, 1893”. He died two months later.

James Edward Murdoch (1811-1893) was one of the foremost American actors of the nineteenth century. He held a highly regarded reputation as a tragedian and a comedian. Among his most popular roles were Mirabell (Congreve’s Way of the World), Mercutio (Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet), Orlando (As You Like It) and, for years, was considered the best performer of Hamlet on American stage. He came out of retirement in 1861 to entertain the Civil War wounded.
