Description: American children’s author and editor Mary Mapes Dodge (1831-1905) hastily penned this brief note which reads: “My dear Miss Hillard, Yes indeed – and with pleasure – and on March 14th at 11 am if that is the day. Yours (hurriedly) and very truly Mary Mapes Dodge”.
Dodge is best remembered for her novel Hans Brinker, and her work with the children’s magazine, St. Nicholas Magazine, in which she was successful in getting many notable authors to make contributions, including: Robert Louis Stevenson, Lord Tennyson, Mark Twain, and Louisa May Alcott. Rudyard Kipling once recounted a tale for her about a boy in an Indian jungle. Dodge requested that Kipling contribute the story to the magazine, and his attempt resulted in The Jungle Book.
