Prince George (1819-1904), Duke of Cambridge, was a grandson of King George III and cousin of Queen Victoria. He served as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces for 39 years and was made Field Marshal in 1862. He opposed many reforms to the Army, fearing that modernization would make the newly created forces ineffective in colonial conflicts.
