Description: This scribbled note was penned by infamous French actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923). Written in French while in Dublin, Ireland in 1881, Bernhardt sends a “remembrance of my travels in the charming city of Detroit”.
The 3 3/4″ x 4 1/2″ card is framed with a vintage real photo postcard of Bernhardt in costume as “The Sorceress”. Framed to: 10 3/4″ x 14 1/4″. Item #A01548
Bernhardt starred in some of the most popular French plays of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Alexandre Dumas, fils’ La Dame aux Camelias, Victor Hugo’s Ruy Bas, and Victorien Sardou’s La Tosca and Fedora. She also played male roles, such as Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and was one of the first actresses to make sound recordings and act in motion pictures. Bernhardt was known for living rather eccentrically; she sometimes slept in a satin-lined coffin and her home was filled with several exotic animals, including a champagne-drinking alligator.
Condition: Very good condition, not examined out of frame. Comes with excellent provenance glued to back of frame — originally sold by the notable autograph establishment — The Kenneth W. Rendell Gallery.
