Description: This part-printed document signed by Queen Victoria grants Robert Grand Watson the position of “Secretary to Our Good Brother the King of Portugal and the Algarves.” The document is also signed by Edward Stanley, the 15th Earl of Derby.
Queen Victoria (1819-1901) was the Queen of the United Kingdom for 63 years, beginning in 1837.
Edward Stanley, 15th Earl of Derby (1826-1893) served as the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1874-1878) during the time this document was signed. He was the son of Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby (1799-1869) who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1852, from 1858 to 1859, and again from 1866-1868.
