Description: American physicist and surveyor Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867) penned and signed this 1862 letter to Erastus Corning (1794-1872), a Member of the United States House of Representatives from New York and former Mayor of Albany, New York. Bache writes: “I send you a series of resolutions just received from N.Y. in regard to the suspension of the Comb survey.”
Bache was an engineer in the United States Army who later became the Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey (position held while writing this letter). He built the U.S. Coast Survey into the foremost scientific institution in the country before the Civil War, mapping the whole coast and erecting numerous observation stations.
