Description: In this one-page autograph letter signed, ophthalmic surgeon and photographer/daguerreotypist Jabez Hogg states that he has made sufficient changes to his manuscript, asking James Samuelson to further employ his “editorial pen” as needed. The referred article could be “The Vinegar Eel (Anguillula Aceti)” published in The Popular Science Review, edited by James Samuelson (1863).

Herewith I return the M.S. and trust I have sufficiently toned down its scientific nomenclature. If you still think it may be further improved pray use your editorial pen in any way you think proper–I hope the I. L. N. [Illustrated London News] will find room this week for a notice of your last Review.

Written on one page of 7” x 4 ½” stationery imprinted: “1. Bedford Square” and dated “25 April 1862”. Paper has a large watermark: “J & J. H 1861.” Item #A01839
Jabez Hogg (1817-1899) was an English ophthalmic surgeon and early photographer. He devoted himself to the study of eye diseases and published several related books. He also was known for his book, A Practical Manual of Photography (1843). He was the editor of the Illustrated London News (1853-66) and Illustrated London Almanack (1845-95).
James Samuleson (1829-1918) was a Liverpool industrialist and the founder and editor of the Popular Science Review (1861) and the Quarterly Journal of Sciences (1864). While studying law, he became interested in social and political issues and wrote The German Working Man (1869) and Work, Wages, and the Profits of Capital (1872).
Condition: Mailing fold lines, otherwise in very good condition.
