Description: United States Army Colonel William Davenport (1787-1858) neatly penned this acceptance to an invitation in the third person. The message reads: “Col. Wm. Davenport accepts with great pleasure the kind invitation of H. P. Buck Esq for Saturday morning next. April 22d 1857.”
Davenport served during the War of 1812 at the Battles of Chippewa and Lundy’s Lane. He later fought in the 1832 Battle of Bad Ax which resulted in the defeat of Black Hawk and ended the Black Hawk War. During the Mexican-American War, Davenport served as Governor of Matamoros.
