Description: In this one-page autograph letter signed, which is addressed to the Reverend William Valentine, Eastlake states in part: “I conceive that the chief interest of the portrait to which you refer must consist in the history connected with it. The painter is probably unknown.”
Sir Charles Lock Eastlake (1793-1865) was a British painter, art scholar, and keeper of London’s National Gallery (later its first Director). During the same year as this letter he was elected President of the Royal Academy and knighted.
