Description

Description: This 1837 manuscript receipt is for payment to Albany architect Henry Rector (1793-1878) from the descendants of Albany Mayor Volkert P. Douw. Rector received $50 for the “plans, specifications, contracts, surveys… of the store erected on South Market Street in the City of Albany.”

Succeeding Philip Hooker as the city’s primary architect, Henry Rector designed numerous buildings across Albany, including the Pearl Street Baptist Church, the Albany Female Academy, the Columbia County Courthouse in Hudson, and the State Hall (now the New York State Court of Appeals). He was also involved in the construction of numerous houses, firehouses, schools, and merchant buildings. Unfortunately, only a few of his buildings are still standing today: the State Hall and a row of houses on Westerlo Street (Albany).
