Description: This 2 1/8″ x 3 5/8″ card is imprinted with the image of a tree and the words “Plant Trees”, and is boldly signed by Julius Sterling Morton. Morton (1832-1902) was a newspaper editor and politician who served under President Grover Cleveland as his Secretary of Agriculture (1893-1897). Previously he had served as Secretary of Nebraska Territory under President James Buchanan (1858-1861). Morton is best remembered for founding Arbor Day. The tree-planting holiday was first celebrated in Nebraska on April 10, 1872, and eventually became a national holiday in 1970.
