Description: These two original black and white photographs capture two window displays at Gimbel Brothers that were designed for the Philadelphia Academy of Music Centennial celebration in 1957. The two windows are outfitted with mannequins in evening wear, music-related ephemera, a cello, and framed backdrops that show interior views of the multi-story concert hall at the Academy of Music. A printed sign in one window reads in part: “Gimbels Salutes the Centennial Celebration of the Academy of Music January 26, 1857 – January 26, 1957″.
Both measure 8″ x 10”. One image has a typed note on verso that reads: “A. Van Hollander Display Director Gimbel Brothers Philadelphia”. Item #P00294
Gimbels was an American department store that operated between 1842 to 1987. The company is known for creating the oldest Thanksgiving parade, the Gimbels Thanksgiving Day Parade, which originated in 1920 in Philadelphia. Gimbels was also considered the chief rival of Macy’s and their feud was popularized in American culture.
