Description / Comments:
Size: 8 1/4″ x 5 3/4″. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Leather spine with “marbled” paper over boards, frontispiece plan of Albany, 100 pages, inscribed and signed by author William Barnes on front free end paper. Barnes (1824-1913) was an author, anti-slavery activist, and founder of the Republican Party. Originally published in 1850. Inked notes on front end papers indicate this book was once owned by Miss Harriet A. Weed, the daughter of Thurlow Weed (1797-1882) the American politician and political adviser to William Seward. Harriet A. Weed was the sister-in-law of William Barnes; he married her sister, Emily Weed. After the death of Emily, Barnes married Elizabeth “Lizzie” Balmer Barnes, to whom his inked inscription is addressed. Another inscription on the front paste-down indicates Lizzie Barnes in turn passed the book to William Barnes the 3rd. Wear along edges, especially at corners and spine ends, chipping to spine leather, scattered light staining, generally relegated to end papers. Quantity Available: 0. Shipped Weight: 2 lbs 0 oz.
