Size: 10 1/4″ x 7 1/4″. A three volume set “continued by B.B. Woodward,” no date, but Woodward’s Preface is dated June 1856, and he notes “the first three book in the first volume are from the pen of Mr. Bartlett; the remainder of the work is by the continuator of his labours, B.B. Woodward.” This set was apparently rebound as there is a small binder’s label inside front cover of each volume; three quarter black leather, gilt stamped decoration and lettering on covers and spine, four raised bands, brown cloth over boards, all text block edges speckled, numerous steel engravings, two page map of North America on front flyleaves of Vol. I. Vol. I is vi + 698 pp., “from the Earliest Period to the Installation of Washington as President”; Vol. II, 720 pp., “From the Administration of Washington to that of Madison”; Vol. III, 726 pp., “From ‘The Second War’ to the Present Times.” This is a very nice set with all engravings with tissues present and in very nice condition, interior is clean, no writing or marks and binding is sound. Binder’s error in that Vol. I is labeled Vol. II on spine and vice versa, very minimal foxing, a spot on a few of the tissues, offsetting from the engravings on previous page; there is some light soil and scuffing to the boards, light wear to leather on edges, corners and spine ends, a fifty-cent piece size spot on front board of Vol. II (actually Vol. I, see above note), a few small spots of leather loss where rubbed near spine on two of the volumes.
