Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. 19th century rebind, half brown leather with marbled paper over boards, marbled end papers, pp. [5], 84, [3], 100-224, [15], title page for the 9th edition in red and black ink, signed by Hoyle on reverse of a second title page (for the 8th edition). Because of rampant piracy of his work, Hoyle signed the authentic publications. Circular gilt-stamped black leather bookplate with the initials EH (Edward Hailstone (1818-1890) a British solicitor and known book collector). Aside from Whist, the book contains the rules for Quadrille, Piquet, Chess, and Back-Gammon. Each section has its own title page.
