Red and black gilt stamped cloth over boards, 280 pages, frontispiece portrait of the author. Covers soiled, spine discolored with gilt faded, bumped at corners and spine ends, Sunday School Library sticker on front paste down (only library marking), foxing to about page 15 and then beginning again near page 277, text block edges soiled and foxed, a stray spot of foxing here and there throughout the text but mostly clean except as noted. Clark, (1835-1879), a Minister of the American Methodist Episcopal Church, was an intimate friend of William Cullen Bryant and other well-known authors; he was considered an exceptionally fine lecturer and his work as editor and author was highly regarded.
