Description: This original CDV depicts an intense looking Dr. Smith. It is stamped on recto and verso with the famed NYC photography firm “Rockwood.”

Stephen Smith (1823-1922), surgeon and public health advocate, was an attending physician at Bellevue Hospital for thirty-seven years. He was instrumental in the creation of the American Public Health Association and the New York State Department of Health. He also served as the State Commisssioner in Lunacy.
