Description
Description: This tempera on board is typical of Portoles’ work… brightly colored, wide-eyed, angular and allegorical. Here what appears to be a Madonna and child are set as part of a still-life. The child holds an apple in one hand and a lush garden/forest can be seen peeking out in the background above the curtains. Signed lower left: “G. Portoles A.”
Gabriel Portoles Ascaso (B. 1930) studied at the Llotja School in Barcelona and later with Jordi Aluma Masvidal. He started using egg tempera in the 1960’s to capture a certain softness and transparency.
30 1/2″ x 20″, framed to: 36″ x 25″. Item #FA00429
Condition: A small rub on the floral-decorated pitcher on the left, otherwise very good condition. Frame has two spots of veneer buckling on lower stile.
