Size: 7 5/8″ x 5 1/4″. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Half black leather, gilt-stamping along spine, marbled paper over boards, 352 pages, illustrated with six plates plus illustrated title page. A handwritten note in period ink on a blank front flyleaf indicates that this book was “Presented to J. Crippen by Col Brown of Montgomery Co August 28 1860 at a Court Martial of which he was the President for the trial of Lieut James H. Andrews of the Cavalry on Charges made by Capt Wheeler”. This note likely refers to Captain Daniel Wheeler of the 39th Regiment of NY Cavalry in which a James H. Andrews is listed as a 2nd Lieutenant. Wear along extremities, end papers stained/foxed, spots on illustrated title page, minor water-staining along bottom edges of numerous pages, tightly bound and generally still in very good condition.
