Description: The writer Michael Cunningham writes an appreciative response to an admirer: “. . . The idea that a book of mine has been of some sort of emotional use to someone else is just about the best news I can imagine hearing.” He ends the note with the playful remark, “And here’s hoping that supervisor of yours begins to understand that your talents would be far better deployed in Paris or San Francisco than in Birmingham.” Signed “Yours / Michael Cunningham.”

Michael Cunningham (1952-) is an American novelist and screenwriter best known for the novel The Hours (1998), for which he won the Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award in 1999. He currently teaches creative writing at Yale University.
