Alice Walker (1944- ) is an American novelist, poet, and social activist. She was the first African American woman to win a Pulitzer prize which was awarded to The Color Purple in 1983. She was a significant part of the civil rights movement, actively advocating for black women’s rights and coining the word “womanism.”
