Description: In this typed letter signed, Maugham gives permission to quote from his old manuscript of “Don Fernando” that he has not seen in sixty years. He admits that he “should have been wise enough to have burnt the manuscript instead of giving it to the Library of Congress.” Signed, “Yours Sincerely / W. S. Maugham”

Written on a 9 ¼” x 6 ¼” sheet of “Villa Mauresoue St. Jean Cap Ferrat, A. M.” letterhead, addressed to Ms. Kuner, and dated February 16, 1953.  An air mail, stamped transmittal envelope accompanies the letter. Item #A02006

William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was an English novelist, playwright and short story writer.  He was trained as a doctor but abandoned medicine to pursue a career in writing.  His best known works are Of Human Bondage (1915), The Moon and Sixpence (1919), Cakes and Ale (1930) and The Razor’s Edge (1944).

Mildred C. Kuner (1922-2021) was an American playwright and professor of playwriting and theatre history. After she retired from Hunter College, she, along with Olive Dunbar, helped found the Icarus Theatre Ensemble in Kendal, Ithaca, NY.
