Description: This First Day Cover commemorates the 60th anniversary of the founding of the settlement of Rehovot, just outside of Tel Aviv, Israel. It is the seat of the Weitzmann Institute of Science. Selman A. Waksman has signed in blue ink across the upper part of the envelope. There is a September 27, 1950 commemorative cancel.
Selman Abraham Waksman (1888-1973), Nobel Prize recipient, biochemist, microbiologist and inventor, is credited with the discovery of streptomycin and other antibiotics.
