Description: This powerful two-color wood-engraved portrait was commissioned and appeared as the cover of the January 1948 issue of Atlantic Monthly. It is titled, inscribed, signed and dated in graphite at the lower margin: “Somerset Maugham for Henry Lynd Ward 1947”.
The image measures: 5 1/2″ x 8″ and is printed on an 8 1/4″ x 11 1/2″ sheet of ivory paper. Item #PR00596
Lynd Kendall Ward (1905-1985), artist, printmaker and novelist, is most known for his wood-engraved wordless books… precursor to today’s graphic novels.
Condition: Light toning, mounting remnants around perimeter of verso. Generally good condition.
