Description: In this Oct 9, 1945 autograph letter signed Howard Chandler Christy writes to Frank M. Flack about the provenance of Mrs. Loose’s painting. He writes, “The portrait of Mrs. Loose (Ella Anna Clark Loose) was painted in Washington while she was living at the Mayflower Hotel, and where she gave many elaborate dinners –many notable attending.” He concludes with “Again, with thanks for your interest . . . /Sincerely Yours/Howard Chandler Christy.”
Written on one side of an 8½” x 11” sheet of ivory letterhead bearing Christy’s name and address “1 West 67th Street.” Accompanying transmittal envelope addressed to “Frank M. Flack, 3742484, First Guard Co U.S.D.B. [United States Disciplinary Board], Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.” Item #A01144
Howard Chandler Christy (1872-1952) was an American artist and illustrator. Although famously noted for his "Christy Girl," he is also known for his WWI military recruitment posters. After the war, he turned to portraits, painting Theodore Roosevelt, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, and Harry Truman among other significant people. He also taught art at Cooper Union, the Chase School, New York School of Art, and The Art Students League.
Frank M. Flack alias Frank Flack (1894-1971) began collecting autographs while he was in the army and later as an English professor. He also served as a German translator at the United States Disciplinary Board (U.S.D.B.) in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
Condition: Fold lines, otherwise very good condition.
