Description: This black and white 8″ x 10″ photograph depicts the packed interior of the Gloversville, New York S. S. Kresge Company store. A display of Kresge’s paints, enamels, and varnish stains are front and center amidst a myriad of hardware, pots, pans and other miscellaneous goods that fill the aisles of the store.
S. S. Kresge Company was one of the 20th century’s largest chain of discount department stores and was owned by American businessman Sebastian Spering Kresge (1867-1966). The company was originally founded in 1899 and was renamed Kmart in 1977.
Typed information in the negative identifies the subject of the photo as store no. 477 at the lower right corner. The verso has an ink stamp that reads: “From Forbes’ Ground Floor Studio 16 Church St. Gloversville, N. Y.”. Item #P00234
