Description: In this brief typed letter signed the actor and manager of His Majesty’s Theatre Company, Herbert Beerbohm Tree, tells the actor O. P. Heggie that he would meet him in London after his tour in Birmingham is completed. Signed, “Yours Truly / H. B. Tree”

Written on a 10” x  8”  sheet of “His Majesty’s Theatre Company” stationery and dated December 5, 1907. The “Autumn, 1907” performance schedule is printed at the top left corner. Item #A02003

Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree (1852-1917) was an English character actor and the manager of His Majesty’s Theatre. He promoted both the classics and new productions, including 16 Shakespearean productions mirroring Edwardian sensibilities, the most successful being Henry VIII, Richard II, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In 1904 he founded what became the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and he was knighted in 1909.

O. P. Heggie (1877-1936), an Australian theater and film actor, began in amateur theater productions in Sydney and London. He gained prominence on Broadway (NYC), playing the lead in Androcles and The Lion, Old Man Minick in Minick, Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, Diggory in She Stoops to Conquer and others. He moved to Hollywood in 1928 and appeared in 27 films, including: The Count of Monte Cristo, The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu, etc.
