Description: This original 1889 photograph shows theĀ Grand Republic steamboat on its way out of Albany during the Washington Centennial, a celebration that marked the 100th anniversary of George Washington’s presidential inauguration. On its way to New York City, the three decks of the ship carry hundreds of Capital Region troops down the Hudson River. According to the caption beneath the image, the men belong to the “3rd Brigade, under the Command of General Parker”.

Text on either side of the mounted photograph lists the companies that made up the 3rd Brigade, including: “10th Batallion [sic], of Albany. Co. B, Capt. Stacpole. Co. C. Capt. Hyatt. Co. A, Capt. Wing. Co. D, Capt. Denison. Command of Col. Fitch. Separate Cos. 3d Oneonta, Capt. Scott. 6th Troy, Capt. Cusack. 7th Cohoes, Tymerson. 9th Whitehall, Capt. Paterson. 12th Troy, Capt. Egolf. 18th Glens Falls, Capt. Garrett. 21st Troy, Capt. Lloyd. 27th Malone, Capt. Crooks. 32nd Hoosick Falls, Capt. Eddy.” Additionally, someone has written in period ink: “22 Saratoga Capt McEwen” on the left side.

Condition: Chip to top left corner of mount, short tears and staining to perimeter of mount. Generally good condition.
