Description: American sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer (1817-1904) penned “Faithfully, E.D. Palmer Apr. 26, 1884” on this 3 1/8” x 4 ½” slip of paper.

 
Erastus Dow Palmer’s artistic career began with carving informal portraits in shell cameo. In 1848 Palmer exhibited a portrait of his daughter at the National Academy of Design in New York City, which escalated the public’s interest in his work. His marble sculpture, White Captive (1858), and his bronze of Robert R. Livingston (1874) are a part of the U.S. Capitol’s National Statuary Hall Collection.
