Description

Description: This original 1881 photograph shows the grand façade of the Pickering Mansion in Salem, Massachusetts. The sides of the mount are printed with the photographer’s information: “G. E. Stanford, Salem, Mass.” and the name of the photographic series this image belongs to: “New Series of American Views.” The verso of mount has a handwritten history of the house: “Pickering Mansion — Salem, Mass. Built in 1651 by John Pickering from England in 1637: Birthplace of Col. Timothy Pickering 1745 – Now owned & occupied by his grandson John Pickering, 1881.” However, there is some erroneous information in the description. According to the Pickering House’s website, “America’s oldest home” was actually built in 1660 and was originally only a two-room farmhouse with additions being added over the centuries by Pickering’s descendants.
