Description: On September 22nd, 1863, James Andersen (Co E, 8th Ohio Volunteers) wrote–devoid of punctuation–to a friend from a picket near the Rapidan river, Virginia: “. . . we are back in old Virginia again we have orders for with eight days raitiuns [sic] I think we are going to richmond or in that direction the rebels are in Plain sight of us at present only the River between us this is not new york here I never had a better time in my life nor never expect to while I am in the army we had super and diners [sic] given to us and we were treated better than if we had been at home the girls came to see us and of course we went home with them . . .” Promises to “wright” a decent letter once they get to camp. Concludes with “Give my Respects to all . . . /James Andersen.”
Signed and pencil written on 9 ¾”x 7 ¾” ruled ivory, laid paper. Item #AM00374
Condition: Mailing fold lines and a few scattered spots. Writing is clear and legible and generally in very good condition.
