Murphy was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1940 after already having served as the Governor of Michigan (1937-1939) and Attorney General (1939-1940) under FDR. He is best-remembered for his fierce dissent from the ruling of Korematsu v. United States (1944), which upheld the constitutionality of the Japanese-American internment camps the government organized during World War II. He emphatically disagreed with the majority ruling, critically stating that the case legalized racism. Item #A00811.
