Description / Comments:
Size: 7″ x 4 1/4″. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Contemporary binding. Full gilt-stamped red leather over boards, five raised bands, previous owner’s name (Joseph Langton) and the year 1778 are imprinted on front board, all edges gilt, marbled end papers, signed by compiler Ann Fisher [Slack] at end of introduction, pp. iii, [1], i-xii, 368, illustrated with three engraved plates and title page vignette. Ann Fisher (1719-1778) was an English grammarian who married Thomas Slack, a publisher and bookseller who published several of her books. Ann Fisher’s publications were wildly popular and thus susceptible to piracy, which may be why she signed this book, as a sort of authentication. Leather is stained, wear at corners and spine ends, previous owner’s bookplate on front pastedown for Henry B. Wheatley (1838-1917), British author of London Past and Present, a topographical and historical dictionary of London streets and landmarks. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 3 lbs 0 oz.
