Description: This 1880 photograph showcases the recent devastation wreaked by a fire at Albany City Hall. The soot-stained neoclassical facade speckled with broken windows rises behind a large group of people lined up in front of the building. A horse-pulled sleigh is in the foreground of the wintry scene.
The building in the photograph was designed by Albany, NY architect Philip Hooker and constructed in 1832. On February 10, 1880, a fire mysteriously started in the County Clerk’s Office in the wee hours of the morning. Luckily, the firefighters on the scene were able to save many of the important city records by tossing them out a window, yet ultimately the building was razed and a new one was put in its place.
