Description: Italian-born American operatic soprano Licia Albanese (1909-2014) boldly signed this headshot in which she gazes into the distance, a devilish smirk on her face, her head resting on her hands.

Albanese made her unofficial debut in 1934 in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, an opera she would become famous for in her role as Cio-Cio-San. She sang more than 300 performances as the geisha during her lengthy career as an opera singer. Albanese soon found international success, performing in Italy, France, and England. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1940, and stayed there for 26 seasons.
