First edition of the work in this format and binding, and/or set or series. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 2 volumes of the 4-volume set. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Volumes I and II only. The Large Paper edition of which 500 copies were printed; this is an unnumbered copy that has "Publisher’s Copy" written in the number space. Reddish cloth over boards with paper spine label, both volumes have a frontispiece with captioned tissue, edges uncut, most pages unopened; Volume I, xx, 382 pages, four illustrations with captioned tissues in addition to frontispiece; Volume II, 388 pages, four illustrations with captioned tissues in addition to the frontispiece. Top edges of the text block have a light soot residue; these volumes belonged to a member of the Houghton family and were exposed to soot from a fire (absolutely no smoke smell to these volumes).
