Gilt-stamped brown cloth over boards, 347 pages, Appendix, plus 12 pages of “Valuable Works Published by Harper & Brothers”. Robert Matthews (1788-1841) was an American religious leader who garnered a cult-like following in 1830s New York. He is remembered for his contentious encounter with Mormon leader Joseph Smith in which they left the meeting denouncing one another as satanic.
