Description: An almost life-size and striking bronze portrait of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, signer of the Declaration of Independence.
This bas-relief plaque measures 18 1/2″ x 16 1/4″ and is signed on the obverse and reverse by the sculptor C. L. Hogeboom and is dated Jan. 21, 1889.
Charles L. Hogeboom (1827-1895) was a multi-talented individual who graduated in 1851 from the NY College of Physicians and Surgeons, served as a surgeon in the Civil War, wrote numerous articles on a variety of scientific topics and was a prolific sculptor. He apparantly favored bas-relief portraits, including as subjects Benjamin Franklin, Dr. John Torrey, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson. His works are housed in prestigious institutions including the National Gallery of Art and Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
