Description: Italian-American sculptor Edgardo Simone (1890-1948) signed this photograph of himself working on a larger-than-life clay bust of Thomas Edison. Simone is pictured in profile holding a scraping tool up to the aged eye of a serenely smiling Edison.

Simone studied at the Beaux Arts Academy in Rome (1906-1913) and came to the United States in the 1920’s where he made a name for himself producing busts of famous people. His bust of Theodore Dreiser is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
