Description: We offer an original oil painting on canvas by Henry Pember Smith. It measures 11 ½” x 8” and is housed in a gilt frame with the outside dimensions 16 ¼” x 12 ½”. It is signed Henry P. Smith in the lower right corner. A small river bed cuts through dense forest rendered with a sensitive, alluring hand. A variety of deep greens and browns provide subtle atmosphere and depth, as well as the thick painterly white caps on the gently inclining waterfall. A contemporary label on verso locates the painting in the Catskill Mountains. Item #FA00225.

Henry Pember Smith (1854-1907) was an American painter who frequently depicted areas around Lyme, Connecticut and coastal scenes from Cape Ann to Maine. He was an active member of the Artist’s Fund Society and the American Watercolor Society. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Brooklyn Art Club, the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. He died from heart disease in Asbury, New Jersey.

Condition: Professionally relined and cleaned. There are some minor marks on the frame. Generally, overall, very good condition.
