Description: The French Romantic composer, Jules Massenet (1842-1912), penned and signed a friendly inscription on one of his Institut de France business cards. He writes, in French, of his imminent return from Milan: ” I will be at Lafayette next Wednesday” and adds a cheerful “Grand success alalala”.

Jules Massenet is best known for his operas, but he also wrote orchestral works, songs, ballets, etc. He was made a chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1876 and was elected to the Institut de France, a prestigious learned society, in 1878.

Condition: The card has some paper loss, obscuring several words, a chip at the upper right blank corner and mounting residue on verso. Overall in fair condition, though the signature is unaffected by the above damage and is clear and bold.
