Description

Description: This 3-page letter was scrawled and signed by the infamous French actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923).

Bernhardt starred in some of the most popular French plays of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Alexandre Dumas, fils’ La Dame aux Camelias, Victor Hugo’s Ruy Bas, and Victorien Sardou’s La Tosca and Fedora. She also played male roles, such as Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and was one of the first actresses to make sound recordings and act in motion pictures. Bernhardt was known for living rather eccentrically; she sometimes slept in a satin-lined coffin and her home was filled with several exotic animals, including a champagne-drinking alligator.

Written on a folded sheet of Bernhardt’s personal “SB” monogrammed stationery with the “Quand Meme” banner. The stationery is edged in gray. 5″ x 3 7/8″.  Letter is written in French in a difficult to decipher handwriting and is sold untranslated. Item #A01240
