Size: 4to. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Black gilt stamped and illustrated cloth over boards, illustrated end papers, illustrated with ninety facsimile reproductions of original drawings & copper-plate engravings by the author (twelve full-page illustrations including frontispiece and eighty-one pencil drawings in text), fold-out Map of Ancient Province of Touraine, [8] 188 pages, Index of Names. Corners and spine ends bumped with some wear, boards lightly scuffed, (gilt dragon with crown on front cover is bright and crisp), some light foxing on end papers, front hinge cracked with front cover slightly loose, some scattered very light foxing on pages up to title page, pages lightly toned, crease along folded edge of map nearest the gutter. In a dust jacket which is soiled & stained, chipped along edges, at corners, and at spine ends but is basically complete; now in a Brodart jacket. Illustrator: Aulton, Margaret.
