Description

Description: English artist William Powell Frith (1819-1909) penned and signed this brief note to I. K. Fuller, Jr.[?] in 1858 which reads: “I have much pleasure in complying with your request for my autograph”.

William P. Frith is best known for his genre scenes and narrative works of Victorian life. He was a member of the Royal Academy from 1853-1890, though he continued to exhibit at the Academy until 1902. His paintings hang in the Derby Art Gallery, Sheffield, Harrogate, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, among others.

Frith was also a member of The Clique, a group of like-minded artists formed by Richard Dadd, a fellow artist who gained “fame” for having a mental breakdown and killing his father, though while he was hospitalized he created some of his most important works.
