Description: Ellen Burpee Farr (1840-1907) moved to Pasadena, California after the death of her U.S. Congressman husband (Evarts Farr). She was one of the early women artists in California… painting local landscapes, flora and still lifes. Her work was exhibited in the California Building of the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
This oil on canvas was one of her favorite subjects… California poppies displayed in a coiled Native American basket. It is signed prominently at the lower right: “Ellen B. Farr”. 10″ x 15″ housed in an oak frame to: 16″ x 21″. Item #FA00388
Condition: Scattered specks of paint loss, two small holes. Generally good condition… a charming, painterly work.
