Description

Description: We offer an engraved, hand-colored map of Asia by Frederick De Wit. The plate is 19 ¼” x 22 5/8”. The map depicts the totality of the Asian continent and surrounding oceans including China, Japan, Tibet, India, Russia, Persia, Borneo and the Pacific Islands. The decorative title vignette of merchants, monkeys, parrots and a camel is hand-colored in blues, greens and vivid persimmon. The text reads: “Accuratissma totius Asia Tabula Recens Emendata Per Fredericum De Wit Amstelodami.” Item # PR00272.

Frederick de Wit (1629/1630 – 1706) was a cartographer and map seller and a highly productive contributor to the Golden Age of Dutch cartography. He published 121 atlases and thousands of loose maps.

Condition: The paper is toned, there is a small tear at the upper left corner and a 1” insect trail at the lower margin near the fold line, still quite presentable and a fine impression of this rare map. The piece has not been examined out of the frame, though it is quite clear that it is not laid down.
