Description: This tonally rich profile portrait of Mrs. Brown-Potter is a testament to Menpes’ superior skills as a printmaker. He has signed in full in graphite at the lower right: “Mortimer Menpes”, and signed in the plate with conjoined “M’s”.

Platemark size: 9 7/8″ x 8″ printed on a 22″ x 15″ sheet of heavy wove paper. Item #PR00500

Mortimer Menpes (1855-1938), an Australian-born British painter/printmaker, learned etching techniques from James McNeil Whistler. He produced over 700 etchings and drypoints during his career. He was a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, the Royal Society of British Artists, among others.

Mary Cora Urquhart Brown-Potter (1857-1936) was one of the first American Society women to become a stage actress.

Condition: Scattered foxing and toning on the more than ample blank margins and on verso. Image very good condition and a strong impression.
